Games: The Answer to Utility and Value in NFT’s

NFT NYC is in full swing. In all the fun, hype, madness and excitement, one thing is clear: The most interesting conversations about NFTs are focused on utility and value.

I am giving a short talk on the Outside.io stage about this today. At MetaKing Studios, we believe games provide the best use case for this type of digital asset.

But first, what exactly are they?

What are NFT’s

NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. It can be anything, art, a contract, rights and more, but the key component is the ‘non-fungibility’. Fungibility describes the interchangeability of something, and so when an item is non-fungible, it means that there are no items that can be directly interchanged with it. These digital assets, are one of a kind tokens that cannot be exchanged like for like with another, which brings in all kinds of use cases and draws.

Past cases of NFT’s in Web3 gaming

In the last year, we’ve seen an initial wave of Web3 games. These have been dominated by breed-collect-trade games that focus on marketplace trades and collection-building elements. There has been no clear value-add to the these digital assets apart from being “collectible”, because of this, instead of playing the game, people were just opening up their spreadsheets, running 50 hot wallets and figuring out the best way to extract maximum value from their play time. Some are even outsourcing the actual gaming to people in impoverished regions!. And to what end? To drain value out of the game they’re playing. To dump their assets to the next sucker in line.

Where does the real utility for NFT’s in gaming lie?

With Web3, we’re moving into a new era of gaming. It will usher in deep, rich gameplay that enables people playing games to have fun. Remember fun?
