BLOCKLORDS Triumphs Over Gamescom

Over 370,000 gamers, developers, cosplayers, and fun-lovers crowded into Cologne’s Koelnmesse, the largest convention center in the world, for six straight days of entertainment madness. In addition to meeting worldwide talent, making new connections and friends, we had the chance to meet YOU, our community, face-to-face. So, what did we learn?

Lesson 1: Print Ahead

Hall 4 is the business area, and hosts the biggest names in the games industry. It was also our home-away-from-home for the week. At the MetaKing Studios booth, we were greeted not by a castle, but by a barren, white wasteland of plastic floors and walls. Oops. 

A flurry of Photoshopping, on-site printers and a sweaty MetaKing Studios team carrying bundles of 6-foot-long vinyl through a convention center filled with nearly 400k people followed. Then a crowd of world-famous game creators watched as we hung up vinyl posters with a single plastic chair, a bottle of window cleaner, and a spatula. It turned out pretty great, though!

This will be a lesson we well and truly, will not forget.

Lesson 2: Fun First Wins Hearts

As lifelong gamers, we designed BLOCKLORDS to be fun to play at its core, and Gamescom was the perfect place for us to share this with the masses. After all, fun is something everyone understands. Our studio’s motto is even “Fun Conquers All”. 

We chose to start every conversation with one simple question: “Will you be a valiant Knight and pledge fealty to a Lord, or will you become a havoc-wreaking Raider and torch farms for fun?”

There was ONE answer… “I’ve got my torch. Now where’s the nearest farm?”

Lesson 2: Fun first wins hearts. Fun breaks down barriers. It allowed us to connect with some of the biggest names and faces in entertainment, and we can’t wait to introduce our new friends to you all soon.

A Nintendo executive was sitting next to me at the bar. We talked about BLOCKLORDS and then he told me that at one of the first gamescoms, there was a little white booth with only a TV and a few chairs, and they waved people inside to talk about their game; it turned out that they were CD Projekt Red pitching The Witcher game. That’s who you remind me of.” I was fangirling a bit by the end of our convo, a Nintendo Exec just compared BLOCKLORDS to The Witcher… My fave series of ALL time. Sam – MetaKing Studios

I was just hanging out outside the booth when someone approached me. He turned out to be from Relic Entertainment (Age of Empires, Warhammer 40,000, Company of Heroes). The next day I sat in the booth and someone sits down beside me… it’s Mr Relic. We chatted through the game and our approach and at the end he said to me “You’ve answered all the questions my 19-year-old son asks me every day. ‘Dad, why would I spend 4000 hours playing Age of Empires when I get nothing in reward’.” It got me hyped about web3.

I had a crazy moment where I had Google inside the BLOCKLORDS booth, and Amazon were trying to get into the booth. It was exciting to have two industry giants waiting to hear more about the project at the same time. Dane – MetaKing Studios

In Conclusion 

Gamescom was an important time for us to connect and learn from our peers and a traditional gaming audience. This year we were among the few pioneering studios building on web3 technology, and were amazed by the overwhelmingly positive reception to BLOCKLORDS. We met new friends, forged new business alliances, and welcomed a whole new wave of players all united under one vision: FUN.

We were awestruck by the sheer scale, showmanship and unforgettable experiences provided by hundreds of other exhibitors at the convention we were lucky enough to spend time with. We had loads of fun with you all! Thanks for the laughs, the epic Mortal Kombat dance battles, our terrifying encounter at the Krafton/Castillo Protocol AR booth, roaring “BLOCKLORDS!!” with us at our cinematic trailers and in-engine gameplay reveal and so much more. It was great to catch up with you all; we’re missing our new friends already and we can’t wait to push the future of gaming forward together. See you at the next one!
